The Destructive Thought Diet

If you think negative thoughts, you will likely have a negative experience.

Dear Wonderful Patients and Friends,

Happy New Year! Here we are, a new year, and I wish a beautiful fresh start for all of us.

The Alchemy of Thoughts
I was thinking about thoughts the other day. How powerful they are; how they mold us and change us. If you think negative thoughts, you will likely have a negative experience. Think about creating a new thing or a new reality, and you'll be doing that!

Thoughts are the alchemy that can save us or doom us. I don't mean to ignore or leave aside things in life and pretend they are not happening. But in the thick of it, we have how we respond to the things we think, the thoughts we let into our personal space.

In this new year, let us think about the things we want to have, the things we know we need to do for ourselves and others, the healthy, joyful things. Let us flow with what life brings and strive to see the positive side and how we can change the flow of our lives to make it more the way we want it, more stable, more healthy, and more balanced.

Being practical about this, let's consider diet. Some of you struggle with changing things you have done for a lifetime. You know it's too hard, and you've failed so many times before.

You've started another diet how many times? Maybe to lose weight and gain it back again plus a bit more. You said you'd exercise, but you just don't get up, or you hang out on the couch with a good book or a great show. You said it was time to get the sugar out, but somehow there is a treat in your hand as you watch tv or read. I know this because I have been there myself. I have done all of these things and been frustrated and unhappy and even mad at myself, the situation I find myself in, and any number of contributing things.

A Truce!
I want to propose a truce!

A truce between yourself and all the self-destructive ideas and thoughts that have won so many times, stealing the joy out of your life.

I would like you to realize that this is your journey, your day, and your year. Many of you have sought my help and have done smashingly, changing and growing and achieving goals. I am so proud of every single one of you who has worked with me and had the courage to make different choices for your health and your future.

We have all been through an actual real-life pandemic. For over two years! Wow! And good on us for being here and making it through despite all the trials this has entailed. On top of the last two years, we still had life; kids, relationships, health problems, sickness, and you name it. We all deserve a month-long sabbatical to the south of France! I hope you get to take one! However, if you don't manage this, I would like to suggest something else.

I want to suggest that you take a minute and think some thoughts about how cool you are, how you work so hard and take care of others, yourself, your family, and the world. The world is made up of so many yous! The yous who do not give up, who cry a good cry and keep on, the yous who love when all the signs say you should not. I see you. I hear you, and I want to tell you that you are enough. I want you to think that thought today. Let's not even think of anything else today. Let's think, "I am enough, more than enough to do to be to have what I want, what I need."

The Destructive Thought Diet
Instead of a food diet this year, let's have a destructive thought diet. Let's resolve to think about those things that build us up, not tear us down. Let's eat the foods that nourish us and if we make a less positive choice, let's make a new, better one tomorrow. Let's move so our body is happy. Let's resolve to minimize the stresses we can and get rid of the ones hurting us. Let us find our strength to believe in ourselves and find and kick out those people or things that don't feed us or heal us.

Let's resolve to love ourselves and do those things that we know are best for us that will give us health, peace, and joy.

Detoxify your Mind and Body
I want to invite you to do a detox of mind and body next month.

I have a very special but simple program planned. It entails fundamental changes that will maximize your wellness and get a jump start on a sustainable lifestyle. Because that is what this is about, sustainability. It isn't about a diet or even losing 15 or 20 pounds. It is about loving yourself enough to do those things that give you energy, joy, and stability.

Some of the foundations of this are: sleep 7-8 hours a night, going to bed before midnight if possible. Eat three meals a day and snacks if you need them. Hydrate every day with enough water to flush out toxins from your cells. Keep your thoughts positive and healthy.

Our physical detox will entail eating fresh fruits and vegetables avoiding alcohol, sugar, gluten, and dairy. Doing these things alone will make you feel pretty amazing.

I will be making available a recipe for a special detox soup and a detox smoothie. The supplements in this detox will encourage the Phase 1 and Phase 2 liver detox and give your cells antioxidants for healing. We will release and remove those food toxins that many of us possibly overdid over the holidays. We will bathe those cells in good nutrition and boost the special antioxidants that neutralize free radicals.

High levels of free radicals damage cells and genetic material. Free radical damage can change the instructions coded in our DNA. It can cause oxidative stress that damages cells and can lead to chronic diseases. We are not defenseless— though the current environment in which we live gives us plenty of challenges. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, glutathione, Co Q10, flavonoids, and many others serve as natural defenses against these free radicals.

Fresh, organic foods provide the best sources of antioxidants in a way our bodies can use them best. That is why we will add these things into our diet in large quantities. Stress, lots of sugar, alcohol and other drugs, environmental pollutants, and medications all add up to a toxic mix that makes our bodies work harder and can damage our fragile cell structure.

So next month, we are going to change that! Look for a separate email in the next few weeks with details.

What are you Grateful For?
In the meantime, I want you to start your day with gratitude. Think of two things every day that you are grateful for before starting your day. I also challenge you to think those thoughts that feed you and do the things that bring more health and more life to you. Let's change the endorphin rush of sugar or alcohol into the rush of feeling real energy coursing through our bodies, real food, real sleep. Let's determine to love ourselves, with all our perceived failings realizing we are pretty dang perfect the way we are. Let's detox body, mind, and spirit.

Kansas City AFC 2022 Highlights

Even the victorious coach, in this case Andy Reid, has expressed reservations about the NFL's overtime system.

Reid hailed Kansas City's good fortune one day after his Chiefs won the overtime coin toss and marched downfield for Travis Kelce's 8-yard touchdown reception to conclude an exciting divisional round game against Buffalo.

"I spoke with Sean McDermott following the game," Reid said of Bills coach Sean McDermott. "I'm sure that's something they're going to look at again." And I'm not averse to that - it's a difficult issue. It was fantastic for us last night, but is it fantastic for the game, which is the primary objective we should all be pursuing? To achieve parity, it presumably has to be capable of hitting both attacks and defenses."

Grim Reaper Chiefs

It was a near-perfect football game (minus an ending that felt incomplete with Allen not getting a chance to answer). And although nothing about these quarterbacks' performances seemed authentic, they also did not feel fluky. These were two metahumans performing at their peak, and the remaining twenty players on the field were unable to stop them.

Mahomes and Allen were also not playing under great conditions. According to Pro Football Focus, the Chiefs offensive line allowed pressure on 39.6 percent of the team's throw plays. However, it was irrelevant—Mahomes ended with a higher passer rating under duress than he did when the pocket was maintained clear.

While most of the commentary surrounding the Chiefs-Bills playoff game focused on the last minutes of play by quarterbacks Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, just as much, if not more, discussion focused on how the game ended, which featured the league's overtime rules.

According to NFL overtime regulations, the side who wins the coin toss and scores a touchdown on their opening drive wins. If they make a field goal, the other team gains possession of the ball and an opportunity to respond or win the game. That is a simplified summary, but it captures the substance of the issue of disagreement.

13 Seconds Chiefs

Occasionally, a miracle is required. And when you do, having a Mahomes is advantageous. With 13 seconds remaining against the tenacious Bills, the Chiefs trailed by three scores deep in their own territory, but Patrick Mahomes' ability to make the unthinkable possible salvaged the day in an incredible 42-36 victory. Mahomes set up Harrison Butker's game-tying field goal with two big completions, then led Kansas City to win in overtime with a touchdown drive. Andy Reid's defense was battered in the fourth quarter by Josh Allen – another quarterback in the high echelons of The Superstar Club – but Mahomes had that unique DNA feature shared by superstars. On certain days, he just will not allow his squad to lose, regardless of the odds. The Chiefs earned the opportunity to host the AFC Championship Game for the fourth straight year as a result of their epic victory. The Bengals are another deserving conference title contender.

My First Visit to a Holistic Doctor: What Happened?

On the day I had my first visit with a holistic doctor, I would describe my mental condition as "skeptical" and "desperate."

This is an interesting combination because "desperate" tends to lessen "skeptical" to a marked degree. Now that it's long past, I can say that this was an excellent thing. Had I allowed my skeptical nature to rule, I would not have the excellent health and knowledge of how to stay that way I currently enjoy.

I'm a corporate organization consultant. It's fun: I go into different businesses, investigate how they're put together, redesign them and implement new and better organization. Staff are happier and more productive, the company is more profitable, and the owners and execs can sleep again.

But at the time I first went to a holistic doctor, I was losing it. Constant lower energy had become complete exhaustion by 4:00 PM every day. I knew I was in real trouble when I had to pull onto the shoulder of I-285 because I couldn't stay awake to the next exit. I recall being at a board meeting and panicking because I couldn't remember which of my clients I was meeting with. Luckily there was a big sculpture of their logo on the wall… that's what saved me.

So, I went to the doctor.

I have a distrust of medical doctors. The one I went to didn't have an answer but ordered up a bunch of blood work. The labs all came back in normal ranges, and that was that. I also have had a poor history with alternative health care. I let a chiropractor client of mine do a treatment program to resolve a long-standing nerve pain in my shoulder. He adjusted me twice a week for four months with absolutely zero results.

But, desperation overcomes skepticism. I decided I could go to a string of medical specialists in hopes of discovering that I had a rare but easily-treatable disease. Or I could find a holistic doctor who could actually solve my problem. Since it seemed to me that I had about as much chance of success with either of these far-fetched ideas, I'd try the one that didn't use drugs and surgery first.

An accountant friend of mine listened to my dilemma. He looked around, leaned in closer, and told me about this doctor that had completely fixed his terrible digestive problems. "Look, I don't understand how this works, but it does. She pushes down on your arm to test stuff, and if what she's testing stresses your body, the arm gets weak." I had thought I was prepared for some alternative health ideas, but this was raising my eyebrows past my hairline. But I respected and trusted my friend, so I got the phone number.

My phone call was truly a new experience. The first question asked was, "What kind of health problems have you been experiencing?" The nice woman then pulled most of my story right out of me. I felt a little better just getting to tell someone about it. And this was before I'd given her my name. I was shocked that the first question wasn't "what insurance network are you in."

I was scheduled for a one-hour initial visit, and she sent me a link to an online questionnaire. The lovely lady warned me that the questionnaire was very complete and would take 45 minutes to fill out.

She was right about the 45 minutes. I answered all the usual medical history questions. However, the questionnaire's main thrust was my symptoms and how my life was affected by these health problems. There were also a lot of lifestyle questions, even "what do you eat for breakfast" (I don't).

The day of my appointment came, and to be honest, I found myself really nervous. I'm an analytical guy by my profession, so I examined my feelings. Mainly, I had a lot riding on this visit. I had no other possible solution to my decreasing energy. I didn't know how much longer I would be able to hang on. My friend swore by these people, and my experience with them so far seemed competent and confident. Could this work? What would I have to do? What if they couldn't help me? Yeah, I was a nervous wreck.

The clinic was in a nice, large space in an office complex. It was open, clean, organized, and friendly. For the first time in my life, I wasn't told to "sign-in" by a surly receptionist who never looked up from her screen. This person jumped up and came out from behind the desk to welcome me. She looked me in the eye. Smiled. It was definitely an alternative experience from normal health care.

The first thing I was assigned to do was watch a 10-minute video. HERE IS A LINK TO THIS VIDEO The guy in the video explained that they weren't going to treat my problems but instead were going to help my body get back its ability to heal. He said that to do this, my body had to be the doctor, and the clinic doctor and staff (and me, apparently) are assistants to help the body. "Who do you think knows the most about your body and health problems, your body? Or the best doctor in the world?" I guess he had a point.

Then the video guy proceeds to demonstrate the weird arm-weakness thing my friend had told me about. Unlike my friend, he seemed to understand the physiology of why this "reflex testing" worked and did a credible job explaining and demonstrating it. I was more than halfway convinced, which is saying something. He did make a good point, that if it was possible to directly test the nervous system to discover stresses and what would help resolve them, this would make it possible for the "body to be the doctor."

Then they strapped electrodes to me and put me on a table. This was a lab called "Heart Rate Variability."

Once again, the technician who set up the test explained everything as we went along and exhibited the same interested, caring attitude I'd experienced with the receptionist. She told me this was a test of the condition of my autonomic nervous system to show any barriers to my healing and the overall condition my body was in.

The test took maybe ten minutes and didn't hurt a bit. Then we did the blood pressure and weight thing, and they put me in a room.

It was a big room that looked like a nice office except for the treatment table and hundreds of little jars in racks. There were many things in that room that I could not identify.

In yet another departure from normal health care, I only sat in the room five minutes before the doctor came in. You know those people who sort of radiate competence and confidence? Dr. Billiot is one of those. On the one hand, she obviously had zero concern about her ability to help me. At the same time, she wasn't even slightly arrogant about that. In my work, I deal a lot with people who can get a job done no matter what, and I pride myself on being able to identify this kind of person. Needless to say, I felt a lot better and less nervous at this point.

Dr. Billiot got right to work, actually spending half an hour going over the questionnaire I'd filled out. By the time we were done, she knew much more about how my health had affected my life than I'd ever realized myself. Here's the thing: she was obviously preparing to have a go at resolving the entire problem so it would never come back. There was no "quick patch up" in her mind at all. This was an engineer surveying to build a suspension bridge. We're talking long-term, permanent resolution of my health.

Then she demonstrated the weird arm-weakness thing on me. It was a through the looking glass moment. My arm actually got weak. What can I say?
She put me on the table and tested me. She kept up a constant series of questions and comments as she went, and ten minutes later, she was done.

She sat me up, looked me in the eye, and told me she could help me. I'll say to you, until that moment, I really was in despair. I just wasn't admitting to it. But I got it. The idea that my body could get back its ability to heal had just become real to me.

I didn't know how this was going to happen, what I'd have to do, how long it would take, or what it would cost. But you know? I didn't care.

And that was my first experience with holistic health care.
