Are Plant-Based Diets Actually Healthy?

There is tremendous interest in "plant-based diets" right now. Environmentally, this can be an excellent thing. But there is a sense, I think, that "Plant-Based" also means "healthy," and this may not be strictly true.

I've had many patients and acquaintances talk to me about how they are converting their diets to "plant-based," assuming that this is the same as a "healthier diet."

The following article sheds some needed light on the idea that "plants are healthy, animal products are unhealthy."

Anti-Nutrients-Is There a Downside to Plant-Based Eating?

In my quest to identify the most effective way of eating, I came across something that has caused a paradigm shift in my thinking on many "healthy" plant foods.

I first need to preface my article on the fact that I have been a "huge" advocate of eating a plant-based diet with minimal meat consumption for as long as I can remember.

My diet typically consisted of drinking a morning smoothie with every type of plant food (spinach, beets, almonds, chard, seeds, etc.) with plant-based protein powder. My lunch was a big salad with more spinach, assorted greens, nuts, and some protein. Dinner was a plate rich in plant foods and some protein. I commonly would eat broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, beets, etc.

My long-standing question was why in the world was I feeling so bad? Irritable bowel syndrome, joint pain, diarrhea, brain fog, anxiety, difficulty losing weight (fat).

Of course, this does not fit what we have been informed about this way of eating for most people. Of course it was healthy!

So I just pushed forward and continued to eat this way, believing that it was the price I had to pay to be healthy.

Hello,

I can tell from the first visit if a patient will do exceptionally well with me or if it will be a struggle.

My ideal patient has a "glass half full" positive attitude, has supportive friends and family, and has decided to get well.

But the reality is that if you've had difficult health problems for years, you may not fit this description!

A lot of built-up frustration and discouragement can be reduced by a more complete understanding of your body, your condition, and how you got into the state you find yourself. Add to this a logical plan to recover your health, a positive, empathetic results-driven practitioner to work with and you may find that your attitude becomes closer to my "ideal patient."

I've found that a lifetime of medical treatment often produces an expectation of quick, easy results. "Take this drug, your heartburn and reflux will be better in hours or days." Except that the PPI drug you're taking will result in long-term mental and bone health issues, and you can only take it for a relatively short time.

When you come to me for a permanent resolution to the deficiencies, stresses and damage that brought about the problem in the first place, it's going to take longer than a few days, and you'll have to do more than just pop a pill.

It's all about perception. A patient who understands how their body heals and the length of time and effort that takes will be positive and happy with their ongoing results. A patient who hasn't moved off the "medical model" of treatment will be unhappy and impatient.

Flexibility of ideas, willingness to work with your body and allow it to heal, and maintaining a positive viewpoint are key to ending your health problems forever.

I Threw My Antacids Away!

Before I came to the clinic, I had a terrible time with indigestion and acid reflux. I had to take 3-4 antacid tablets 2-3 times a day. Possibly as a result of the intake of these antacids, a hair analysis test showed a toxic level of aluminum in my body! But now, I don't have to take any antacids. I've found that the risk of cardiovascular and bone health problems after menopause is little known or understood.

If you're a post-menopausal woman, either naturally or from surgery, or if you have a post-menopausal close friend, spouse, or family member, this is important information.

Your doctor may incorrectly tell you that post-menopausal hormones are "not a problem." Many won't even test.
